Summary
Fiction that dramatizes the classic 'blue eyes' common-knowledge puzzle. Five hyper-rational islanders (boosted by 'sparkroot') are stranded when a shipwrecked Spaniard announces that someone among them has blue eyes - triggering the induction whereby, on the nth day, n blue-eyed people who can deduce their own eye color must commit suicide. The story walks through mutual vs common knowledge, probabilistic-vs-certain knowledge, and assorted dodges, then lands a second twist: the islanders are all secretly atheists governed by the very same structure - each privately disbelieves the Volcano God, each knows the others do, but it was never common knowledge, so the shared pretense held. The outsider's announcement collapses both equilibria at once.
